Language Contacts in the Northeastern Regions of the Baltic Sea

There are many research projects in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Joensuu which focus on sociohistorical, cultural and linguistic contacts in the Baltic region. They can broadly be divided into two groups: those which deal with the contacts between Finland, Russia and the Baltic area, and those which deal with the linguistic situation of Karelia and Ingria. Fieldwork has been carried out over a number of years and a substantial collection of data is already available.

The study of language contacts is mainly linguistic and its interest lies in the linguistic and cultural contacts in the area, both historically and currently. The research group aims to shed light on how the proximity of the Russians to the Fenno-Baltic peoples over many centuries is reflected in the different languages of the area.

The research into the linguistic situation in the Baltic area is mainly sosiolinguistic and thus focusses on the linguistic situation of Karelia and Ingria from a social and political perspective. It also deals with the speakers' attitudes and linguistic habits.
